Each UTC is sponsored by at least one local university, which plays a key role in many important aspects of education delivery. Universities advise on the design of a UTC’s curriculum, participate in governance, support projects for students and employers, and provide specialist knowledge.
Partnership working
UTCs and universities working together to improve student education
There are a number of examples where universities and UTCs have flourished by working with one another. These close relationships have expanded and improved opportunities for students, many of whom then progress onto higher education courses.
Lincoln UTC
Baker Dearing partnered with Lincoln UTC and its sponsor, the University of Lincoln, to deliver the UTC Health Tech Challenge in July 2024. The challenge was held on the university’s campus and involved a competition where UTC students presented measures to improve the patient experience. There were also several speeches on the day from industry professionals, including the university’s pro vice chancellor Abigail Moriarty.
Aston University Engineering Academy
Located next to Aston University’s campus, AUEA maintains a close relationship with its higher education sponsor. The UTC was commended in its last Ofsted report for its “strong” links with the university and many of its students progress there after completing their UTC education.
AUEA’s latest expansions, including a jewellery designer-maker training facility and maths school, have been enthusiastically supported by Aston University.
