UTC Sleeves

The UTC Sleeve has been developed by Baker Dearing in association with leading multi-academy trusts and University Technical Colleges.

It will introduce specialist pathways, such as digital or engineering, within mainstream secondary schools, drawing on the experience and successes of the UTC programme.

Characteristics of the UTC Sleeve

Characteristics of the UTC Sleeve

Key Stage 4 curriculum

Students taking the UTC Sleeve pathway at KS4 will study the compulsory national curriculum subjects, as well as the other compulsory parts of the national curriculum and one other EBacc subject. The three remaining subjects will be dedicated to the UTC Sleeve’s specialist pathway.

Key Stage 5 curriculum

UTC Sleeve students will take a T Level, or a combination of A Levels and a single applied general qualification (such as engineering) linked to the specialist pathways. All other aspects of the UTC Sleeve at KS4, such as project-based learning or mentoring, will continue at KS5.

What we need from the DfE

The UTC Sleeve proposal has been submitted to the Department for Education’s curriculum and assessment review.

Baker Dearing is seeking the department’s backing of UTC Sleeves, including start-up funding for each school, exemption from certain accountability measures, support for a process to select pilot schools, and recognition of and on-going support for Baker Dearing’s relationship with these schools versus our relationship with UTCs.
