Doncaster UTC‘s MP Sally Jameson spoke during Work and Pensions Questions in the House of Commons on 9 December to ask about the town’s proposed new UTC.
The previous Conservative government approved two new UTCs for Doncaster and Southampton. But the current government last year paused all new free school projects, including the two UTCs, and has promised an update by the end of this year.
Jameson yesterday asked whether the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) would be working with the Department for Education on Alan Milburn‘s review into rising numbers of young people out of work and education.
“Doncaster UTC has been incredibly good at linking industry and education,” she told ministers. “I hope that, in the near future, the government will agree to expand such work in my constituency and across the country.”
Minister Andrew Western MP responded that Milburn’s review “will consider all the interventions required to bear down on NEETs and to support institutions such as the Doncaster UTC.”
Thank you to Sally Jameson for her support of the UTC network and to the minister for his answer.
Yesterday, Baker Dearing’s Life President Lord Baker also asked Skills Minister Baroness Smith in the Lords about our proposal for a pilot of UTC Sleeves, to deliver high-quality, employer-led technical education in mainstream schools.
