UTCs celebrate ‘exceptional’ results under new Ofsted inspection model

The UTC programme is off to an excellent start with the new Ofsted inspection model, with two of our UTCs, London Design and Engineering UTC and UTC Portsmouth, already being awarded the new top grade of ‘exceptional’ in at least one area.

London Design and Engineering UTC received five exceptional grades for attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, leadership and governance, and personal development and wellbeing.

Inspectors praised LDE for its truly positive impact on pupils’ attendance, behaviour, achievement and their lives. Leaders, the report notes, do everything in their power to reduce barriers such as knowledge gaps or a poor experience of previous schools so that all pupils can thrive and succeed.

Baker Dearing’s CEO Kate Ambrosi commented: “We are elated with this report, which puts London Design and Engineering UTC among the top ranks of schools in the country.

“The findings that pupils benefit from the employer-designed curriculum and that students are turned into young professionals is yet more evidence of the success of the UTC programme.

“Every UTC endeavours to achieve what LDE has: to reduce barriers so all students can thrive and set high aspirations for their future.

“We are pleased that the new Ofsted framework recognises this success after Baker Dearing and UTCs engaged so enthusiastically with the inspectorate during the creation of the framework.

“Congratulations to the staff, students, trustees, and partners of LDE UTC on this incredible achievement.”

Ofsted: UTC Portsmouth praised for “vibrant, thriving community”

UTC Portsmouth was found to be exceptional in personal development and wellbeing and inspectors were impressed with its vibrant, thriving community, which makes sure that students develop and achieve incredibly high aspirations.

The report also notes how the UTC’s STEM habits of mind system, developed with employers and universities, mean pupils gain the knowledge, skills and character traits that the STEM sector prizes.

Baker Dearing’s CEO Kate Ambrosi has commented: “This report confirms that UTC Portsmouth continues to deliver a top-class education for its students and we are incredibly pleased with it.

“Its findings speak to the immense amount of thought that goes into designing the UTC’s curriculum and approach. These are what help students achieve those very ambitious destinations.

“Congratulations to the students, staff, trustees, and partners.”
