UTC students inspired by British GP as Silverstone UTC receives $1m for advanced manufacturing centre

Baker Dearing is thrilled with the announcement the Gene Haas Foundation is pledging $1 million to create the Gene Haas Centre for Advanced Manufacturing Centre at Silverstone UTC.

This news, which came on the weekend of the British Formula 1 Grand Prix, will mean more transformative life opportunities for young people who attend the University Technical College. Just days before the race, students from 10 UTCs and a school attended a STEM day organised by Mission 44 at the UTC and Silverstone race track.

We would like to thank the foundation, Mr Haas himself, Kathy Looman, and Andrew Ward for their continued and expansive support of the UTC programme. As well as this announcement, the foundation also provides immense support for our engineering CPD programme for UTC staff.

Congratulations to Angela Murphy and the UTC team for this excellent news.

Students inspired by engagements with race teams

Scarborough University Technical College, UTC Derby Pride Park, Lincoln UTC, Waterfront UTC, Silverstone UTC, Shireland Biomedical UTC, Newhouse Academy, UTC Portsmouth, UTC Swindon, and UTC Warrington all attended the STEM day on Thursday 2 July.

Young people stood in front of a grey gateway; the lintel adorned with a Formula 1 logo.In a fantastic piece of enrichment, they received a paddock tour, to see the teams setting up for the race and to speak with some of the engineers and staff.

The students listened to a keynote from Mission 44 CEO Jason Arthur and took part in a workshop on Arduino Q board, exploring how data and AI tools work in real-world applications. This replicates some of the sensor-driven systems used in F1. Baker Dearing CEO Kate Ambrosi and Silverstone UTC Principal Angela Murphy also spoke at the event.

Thank you to Mission 44 for organising the day and for all the employers and organisations who took time to make this an excellent learning and enrichment opportunity for the students. Thanks also to the UTCs who attended.
