UTC Reading receives the World Class Schools Quality Mark

On Thursday 7 December 2017, UTC Reading were awarded the World Class Schools Quality Mark at a prestigious ceremony held at Churchill College, Cambridge University.

UTC Reading has once again been recognised for the contribution it makes to the young students who study in the school and has become one of only 60 schools in the country to receive such an award.

16 of the 20 Ofsted Outstanding schools from across England applying for World Class status this year, were delighted to hear that they had passed the extremely demanding assessment process, undertaken by their students over the course of the year, which culminated in a challenging assessment day on 29 November.

Throughout the process, the award assesses whether students are World Class, against a skills and competency framework unique to organisation, because it measures young people’s readiness for the world of work and life in the 21st century.

WCSQM is all about the students. The assessment is of the students not the school, and students who have already achieved World Class status can train as assessors for the Mark. The Award Ceremony provides a unique opportunity for World Class schools to come together to recognise and celebrate the hard work and World Class abilities of their students.

The application and assessment process to achieve the mark, required 6 students from the UTC to take the lead in demonstrating their world class capabilities on behalf of all of the students in the UTC. The six UTC Reading students were, Holly Maddox, 15, Fraser Bradshaw, 15, Frances Dresser, 16, Caitlin Sutherland, 17, Adam Carter, 18 and Jonathan Foot, 18.

Adam Carter, Student President at UTC Reading did a joint presentation at the award ceremony to describe his experience throughout the rigorous assessment process. At the end of his presentation he ended by saying:

We feel now that, after this process, every student involved can go on and do something World Class in their future.

Principal, Jonathan Nicholls was thrilled with the achievement:

To become one of only 60 schools in the country to achieve this award is incredible. It is an award that reflects the hard work and determination of our staff, the fantastic support we receive from our business partners but most importantly, it demonstrates the motivation our students have to set themselves apart and be prepared for global opportunities. I am extremely proud of all of our students but I am very grateful to our team of six who have represented the UTC in such a positive way throughout this process.
