MPs and peers meet star UTC students at Baker Dearing’s Commons event

Baker Dearing was honoured to welcome Members of Parliament and peers, UTC leaders, students, and a number of our supporters to a breakfast meeting in the House of Commons on the morning of 11 November.

This was an important and highly productive meeting, which followed the publication of the Curriculum and Assessment Review’s final report, the government’s post-16 white paper, and the beginning of the consultation on Level 3 pathways.

It was fantastic to be able to connect our political supporters with our UTC community and stakeholders, facilitating discussions which will help more young people access high-quality, employer-led technical education.

We would like to thank our host, Derby South’s Baggy Shanker MP, who chairs the UTC MP Technical Education Policy Group and whose constituency includes UTC Derby Pride Park, as well as Derby North MP Catherine Atkinson, Doncaster UTC’s MP Sally Jameson, Leigh UTC’s MP Jim Dickson, Dunfermline and Dollar MP Graeme Downie and Liberal Democrat peer Lord Storey for attending.

Thanks also to John Yarham and Nicola Hall from the The Careers & Enterprise Company, Raytheon UK’s STEM Lead Rosie Lawrence, and Joanne Giles from the Essex Chambers of Commerce & Industry for coming along.

They had the opportunity to connect with star students from London Design and Engineering UTC as well as its CEO and principal Geoffrey Fowler and careers lead Janice Tricks, UTC Derby principal Lee Kirkwood, Waterfront UTC principal Fiona McLean, BMAT STEM Academy chair Ashley Ward, Partnership Learning CEO Roger Leighton OBE, as well as Baker Dearing Chair Stephen Phipson CBE, CEO Kate Ambrosi, and members of our team. Thanks to all the UTC leaders and students who attended.
