Level 3 students who built skills at their UTC achieve excellent results

UTC students across the country have received top marks in their Level 3 exams and will be progressing onto life changing education and employment destinations.

Last Thursday saw hundreds of thousands of students receiving results for A Levels, T Levels, and vocational and technical qualifications. UTC students who received results will now progress onto apprenticeships, university, and further education and employment in a variety of technical and professional fields. This includes engineering, construction, medicine, and digital media.

Gabrielle Pirie from Lincoln UTC was awarded A*, A*, A*, A* in her maths, further maths, chemistry and physics A levels. One hundred per cent of Lincoln UTC’s students on an extended BTEC or the new T Level qualification passed their course, with 56 per cent achieving Distinctions.

Josh Kay from UTC Media City achieved three Distinction* in his Games Design L3 BTEC, and a grade C in Graphics. He will be progressing to study a four-year degree course in Games Design at Staffordshire University, a leader in the subject.

“I actually cannot believe I am going to university,” Josh said. “I have loved being at the UTC. If I hadn’t been here and built the skills I have, I don’t think I would have been going to university.”

Josh chose the four-year course so he can spend a year in industry, having come to understand the value of work experience while studying at the UTC.

WMG Academy for Young Engineers Solihull student Ben Jones will be starting a machinist engineer apprenticeship with Rolls Royce in September, after achieving Distinction*, Distinction, Distinction in his Engineering Extended Diploma BTEC.

Ben’s apprenticeship will involve highly skilled, complex and precision work, making components for Rolls-Royce engines from specialist materials using conventional machines such as lathes, milling and grinding machines or CNC machining – a computer-aided, automated technique.

Ron Dearing UTC student Mercy McFarlane is preparing to begin an electrical engineering apprenticeship at a founding partner in the school, Smith+Nephew. This is after achieving a triple Distinction in her extended engineering diploma.

Mercy said: “I’m really proud of my grades, and all the hard work has paid off.

“I can’t wait for my apprenticeship. The whole male side of my family are all engineers and I want to be the first female. I’d like to be an offshore electrical engineer working on oil rigs in the future.

“I’ve loved my time at Ron Dearing UTC and all the opportunities it has given me.”

A UTC education does not open one additional route for students, but many. As Yaman Mohammed demonstrated, turning down offers from multiple broadcasters and universities to take up an apprenticeship in digital production at LBC, a radio station owned by Global, a founding partner of Yaman’s UTC, Global Academy.

Yaman has been working as part of a team which created a news format for use across radio, YouTube and social media. The project was aimed at young audiences and recently won Best Speech Programming at the Young Audio Awards.

He said: “I was unsure about moving to Global Academy at first as I was very happy focusing on a pure A level route – however, it was one of the best decisions I made.

“The connections and experiences I have got whilst at the college were second to none and have landed me in my dream role at LBC.”

Scarborough UTC also saw great results, with two students each achieving four A* grades at A level and a further three achieving double Distinction* grades for their Engineering diploma.
