Rhian Priest - Principal Designate

Berkeley Green UTC announces new principal designate

Berkeley Green UTC has appointed Rhian Priest as its principal designate. Rhian already has a wealth of experience in managing a successful UTC as she is also principal of Bristol Technology and Engineering Academy (BTEA). She will put her immense expertise to good use managing both UTCs.

Rhian joined the BTEA in 2013 as its founding principal. Three years after opening, the UTC achieved one of the highest GCSE pass rates in the West of England region with 66% of Year 11 students gaining A-C grades in English and Maths. In the 6th form, 65% of A-Level learners achieved an A or B grade in Maths and Science, and the average BTEC Engineering grade is Distinction Plus. An impressive 40% of students gained an apprenticeship with organisations including Airbus, Rolls Royce, The Royal Navy and Dyson with the remainder moving on to university or into employment.

Berkeley Green is set to open in September 2017 and will offer cutting edge facilities for the STEM sector. An associate principal leading on the day-to-day management of the Berkeley Green UTC will be appointed in the New Year and will work directly to Rhian.

Rhian said:

Berkeley Green UTC shows huge promise and will offer new and exciting opportunities for young people across the region. I’m looking forward to being a part of the journey leading towards its opening in September 2017 and beyond.

SGS College are the main sponsors of the UTC and their Principal and Chair of the UTC Governing Body, Sara-Jane Watkins said:

The Berkeley Green UTC is an exciting development that will be an asset to the region. Rhian’s experience and proven success at BTEA will be an asset to Berkeley’s UTC.

BTEA and Berkeley Green are holding open events for those interested in studying or learning about UTCs. BTEA is hosting an event on Saturday 15 October 10:00-13:00, while Berkeley Green’s event will take place on Saturday 5 November, 10:00-14:00.
