Baker Dearing Life President Lord Baker and CEO Kate Ambrosi have today appeared before the UK House of Lords Numeracy for Life Committee, promoting UTCs’ role in preparing young people for employment.
Kate told the committee: “UTCs are all about contextualisation. So Silverstone UTC has a business part to it, an engineering part, and digital provision. The students do not just study motorsport. But it is taught in the context of motorsport.
“Really it is the businesses that put learning into its real context and that is across all UTCs. So Leigh UTC Dartford has lots of SMEs, alongside some very big companies, but lots of SMEs, and they will indicate the purpose of learning and indicate what they value, and do projects with students in which the young people utilise their skills as they would do at work.
“Students are constantly aware that the skills they are developing are of use and importance and they will be valued in the long run. It is all about context.”
Kate also highlighted how students at Mulberry UTC can access “a number of different ways of learning, but it is all supported by industry,” including the National Theatre.
“So students are learning the skills they need to get good GCSE maths, English, and science grades.”
Baker Dearing would like to thank the committee for inviting Kate and Lord Baker to speak on the important subject of numeracy skills.
