Andy Burnham and Lord Baker visit school to promote MBacc

Baker Dearing Life President Kenneth Baker, CEO Kate Ambrosi, trustee Paul Birt, and Chief Adviser Simon Connell joined Greater Manchester Combined Authority mayor Andy Burnham on a visit to Laurus Ryecroft high school on Thursday 13 November.

The event was to discuss and promote Burnham’s high-profile Greater Manchester Baccalaureate or MBacc, which aims to help guide young people onto technical education pathways in the city region.

Baker Dearing is working with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, which Burnham leads, on exploring how our innovative UTC Sleeve model could help deliver the baccalaureate. The model, which involves developing a high-quality, employer-led pathway within an existing mainstream school, could help more young people benefit from a UTC education.

The visitors where able to see the high school students’ exceptional robotics work and take part in a roundtable with students, where the need for technical pathways to meet employer skills needs was widely agreed upon.

Andy Burnham and Lord Baker both spoke at the event, with the latter paying tribute to the mayor’s ambition for the MBacc.

The visit was a great opportunity to witness an ‘outstanding’ school and discuss technical education pathways in Greater Manchester. Thanks to Andy Burnham for attending the visit. Thanks also to Andrew Law, the Laurus Trust, and Laurus Ryecroft for hosting us.
