Baker Dearing this week attended The Labour Party conference in Liverpool, meeting key stakeholders such as the Education Secretary and getting our voice heard at crucial events.
Throughout the conference, CEO Kate Ambrosi and Public Affairs Adviser Nicolas Heslop met with stakeholders from across politics and industry, pushing for greater technical education opportunities for young people. Especially in light of the government’s very welcome announcements of new technical pathways for 14-year-olds and new vocational GCSEs.

On the second day of the conference (28 September), Kate spoke at a Youth Futures Foundation event on youth unemployment; ran into Education Secretary Lucy Powell MP (pictured top) and West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker; and spoke on a panel organised by Education Policy Institute and the Observatory for Mathematical Education. The panel focused on on why maths education is key to breaking down barriers to opportunity, and comes after Baker Dearing gave evidence to the House of Lords Numeracy for Life Committee.

Kate and Nicolas also spoke with Skills Minister Baroness Smith, Schools Minister Georgia Gould, Liverpool City Region Combined Authority mayor Steve Rotheram, as well as Defence Minister and Plymouth MP Luke Pollard.

Overall, Baker Dearing was able to successfully use the conference to push for high-quality, employer-led technical education opportunities for more young people and present our network of University Technical Colleges and UTC Sleeves as the perfect model to carry those opportunities forward.
