Baker Dearing was delighted on Tuesday 27 January to present certificates to the first cohort of recipients of the Baker Award for Technical Education. Our thanks to Zurich Engineering for sponsoring the event, which was held at the prestigious One Great George Street in Westminster.
Certificates were presented to winners from Doncaster UTC, London Design and Engineering UTC, UTC South Durham, South Devon UTC, The JCB Academy, Leigh UTC, Thomas Telford UTC, UTC Leeds, University Technical College Norfolk, UTC Oxfordshire, and WMG Academy for Young Engineers in Coventry. Congratulations to all of them.

The ceremony also featured a range of top industry speakers, including Baker Dearing Chair Stephen Phipson, who is also CEO of manufacturers’ trade body Make UK. We were also privileged to hear from Georgia Turner, Programme Manager, Materials Handling, from JCB; Dominic Dawson, Chief Engineer at Zurich Engineering; and Baker Dearing Life President Lord Baker.
Georgia told the audience: “As you celebrate today, see it for what it truly is: a solid foundation and the invitation to build something extraordinary. And a reminder, you already have the tools, so what do you do with them? You have the skills, the potential and the future is completely yours to shape.”

Dominic said during his remarks: “I’m the age in my career where I am looking to step back into retirement, winding down after 45 years in engineering.
“And yet, standing here today, I can honestly say I have never felt more excited or optimistic about the future of this profession. That’s because while I’m preparing to step back, you’re all preparing to step forward.”
Lord Baker expressed his hope that, in five years’ time, the ceremony will have enough recipients to require booking the Albert Hall!
Baker Dearing would like to thank the speakers and also Christopher Smith from Amazon (pictured top with Doncaster UTC student Antonina Kapek), Anna Fritz from EAL, and Suzanne Lawler from Innovate Awarding for presenting the certificates. We were also pleased to be joined by Simon Smith, Managing Director of Baker Dearing partner Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, and a host of other employers and supporters.
Thank you everyone for attending and making the first Baker Award ceremony a success.
