Baker Dearing has signed a partnership agreement with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, one of the country’s leading civil engineering businesses, which will throw open new opportunities for UTC staff and students.
The new partnership was marked during thinkUTC week, the annual celebration of the University Technical College programme, with a visit by the company’s Managing Director Simon Smith and Strategic Development Director Gary Shuttleworth to London Design and Engineering UTC on Wednesday 19 November.
The East London school is one of the multiple UTCs already working with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, which has provided placements, projects and inspiration for students preparing for civil engineering careers.
During their visit, Simon and Gary met students who had worked on reimagining the Royal Docks Cable Car port through a Dragons’ Den-style competition. This project was featured in a recent Policy Exchange report on the UTC programme.

Accompanied by the UTC’s CEO Geoffrey Fowler, Baker Dearing CEO Kate Ambrosi, and our Director of Curriculum Innovation Steve Leahey, Simon and Gary also visited LDE’s new building. This houses the UTC’s East London Furniture Institute and a brand-new mechatronics facility, where students demonstrated an impressive production line that they had designed and built.
The visitors then met Baker Dearing’s Life President Lord Baker as well as several students who discussed their career plans and what they have learnt at the UTC.

It was a fantastic way to kick off what is sure to be a productive partnership between Baker Dearing and Morgan Sindall Infrastructure. The partnership will involve using the company’s expertise to align the UTC curriculum to industry standards and future employability requirements. Careers in the engineering and construction sectors will also be showcased and the company will help fund equipment and uniforms to promote student inclusion.
Thanks to Simon and Gary for visiting and supporting the UTC programme. Thanks also to the staff and students of LDE for being such welcoming hosts.
