Duke of York Award Winners

Students from UTCs across the country received the Duke of York Award for Technical Education from HRH The Duke of York at a ceremony held at St James’s Palace on 11 Oct 2016.

The Award recognises the success of UTC students who have studied highly technical subjects including engineering, health sciences, advanced manufacturing and computer science. It also shows the diverse education young people receive at UTCs which offers academic, technical and practical learning.

HRH The Duke of York presented awards to 186 students at St James’s Palace. As well as those receiving gold and silver awards, a further 57 also received bronze awards. Students are nominated for the Award based on successful completion of work experience placements, academic achievements and development of workplace skills together with a rigorous assessment interview.

As well as the main ceremony two students were also awarded outstanding achievement awards. Harry Dressel from The Leigh UTC received a Gold level award in recognition for his ability to master technical manufacturing skills, his work on a range of employer projects and his involvement in Greenpower. As well as securing good grades he also taught his peers CAD and machining skills. Ross Fludgate from Central Bedfordshire UTC received a Silver level award in recognition for his aptitude in CAD. Throughout his time at the UTC he was an enthusiastic and keen student and he has now secured a position as a designer within a steel detailing company.
