Secretary of State for Education officially opens Scarborough UTC

Scarborough UTC opening

Scarborough UTC gave a warm welcome to the Secretary of State for Education, Justine Greening, who attended the official opening of the brand new campus with Lord Baker, Chairman, Baker Dearing Educational Trust, on 19 January 2017.

The Education Secretary met and talked to staff and students during a tour of the UTC’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities and officially opened the school with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque.

She praised Scarborough UTC for championing the aspirations of young people to pursue careers and employment in engineering and manufacturing for which there is ever increasing need for new talent.

Speaking about her visit to Scarborough UTC, Ms Greening said:

I think it’s fantastic for giving these young people a very different education – much more practical and technical and one they find stimulating. It’s also matching them up with amazing employers which can offer them great opportunities and careers. It’s a winning combination.

Scarborough UTC aims to give young people in the area the skills to help grow the existing engineering, technology and manufacturing companies. These include the UTC’s sponsors such as Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), University of Hull, McCain Foods and Unison.
