Gold medal for Watford UTC student at 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games

Tom Lish - gold medal

The Watford UTC student Tom Lish secured the first gold medal in the Commonwealth Youth Games held last month in The Bahamas. Part of a 72 strong team from the UK, Tom had four Judo fights taking the Gold, with Silver going to Australia and Bronze to Scotland.

It’s been a busy year for student Tom, who alongside his Judo competitions, has been studying A Level Maths, Physics and Computing at the Watford UTC. Tom said:

I’ve had an amazing amount of support, from the UTC who have allowed me to compete alongside my learning, and of course my coach, Laurie Rush from Rush Judo in Berkhamsted. It was a fantastic experience for me. We had a short time to acclimatise and overcome the jet lag, but my early win meant I was able to spend time training with other athletes and supporting the rest of the team.

Tom is now training hard in preparation for the British Championships in December.

The Watford UTC works with a range of major local employers, who will provide realistic hands-on projects for students and work with the UTC to ensure its curriculum, meets industry needs. With widely reported skills shortages in both the digital and hospitality industries, the UTC aims to train confident, highly competent individuals to fill the roles of the future.
